Highlighting the Staff of Motive Action: Jennifer
Instructor Jennifer Farrand: writer, painter, and all around creative mind
Some of our staff agreed to be interviewed for our Blog. See what instructor Jennifer Farrand had to say for our fun interview.
What do you like best about working at Motive Action? What does it mean to you?
Motive Action is such a great place to work because I feel like my work makes a difference. I get to work with great students and staff everyday, and at the end of the program, students achieve real success and get to start a career in an industry they are passionate about that stimulates and motivates them. There’s no greater feeling than when one of our students return for a visit and tell us what kind of impact we’ve had on their lives!
What is a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I love orchids - they are so beautiful and otherworldly. I have a collection at home and I can actually get them to flower again. Many people don’t know how to care for orchids effectively. They can be overwatered very easily, for example. They are similar to a cactus in that way – ignoring them some of the time works best!
What is your dream car/truck/vehicle?
I look for functionality in a car - good on gas, long-lasting, and lower insurance. I generally like Japanese cars. My current car, a Toyota Matrix, has everything that I like. It’s got a surprising amount of space in it too! I drive a standard, which always seems to impress my students. I like the control a standard car gives you. When driving on winter roads, it’s easy to gear down.
What is your favourite activity to do to alleviate boredom?
Anything creative - I paint, write, and create music. I can get lost for hours when I undertake a creative project!
What advice would you give in times of stress, such as during this period of self-isolation?
I always remember that “This too shall pass.” In the meantime, try to make the most of the opportunities presented. Usually in life, I feel like I don’t have enough time to get things done, projects around the house, etc., so I am trying to take advantage of the gift of extra time that I currently have!
It’s also important to recognize that some days are not going to go so well, and you have to give yourself a pass on that too. Self-care is so important when we get stressed, so give yourself a little treat from time to time, and allow for the “low” days when they happen.
