Highlighting the Staff of Motive Action: Mike

Mike

Meet Mike Hansen, our Program Director, in the next Highlighting the Staff of Motive Action interview!

Some of our staff agreed to be interviewed for our Blog. See what our Program Director Mike Hansen had to say for our fun interview.

What do you like best about working at Motive Action?  What does it mean to you?

I suppose the best thing for me is trying to help young people move forward in their careers. It is very rewarding to see young dynamic adults realize their potential, and to see them reach their goals; it’s definitely something very special.

What is a fun fact most people don’t know about you?

I am a music fanatic. I cannot play a note to save my soul on any instrument, but I constantly seek out new musical artists, and I am always listening to something new.

What is your dream car/truck/vehicle?

I would love a new Cummins diesel truck; I like the deep 6 cylinder exhaust sound. I would also like to try out a Tesla in the dead of winter on my commute - probably need AMA on speed dial, but I would like to see how it works when it’s really cold. Now to answer your question…My dream car is the cheapest to run and maintain, currently an old TDI.

What is your favourite activity to do to alleviate boredom?

This may sound bizarre but I deleted the word boredom from my vocabulary when I started at Motive Action 21 years ago. I like to cook, and spend as much time outside as possible. Also, I am a big fan of micro obsessions, seeking out odd cooking ingredients that don’t cost a lot, finding or making parts for broken tools, etc., not to mention 3D animation.

What advice would you give in times of stress, such as in self-isolation/social distancing?

I always remind myself that my brain is a bunch of electrical conductors, and that what I am feeling is just electrical stimuli. If I don’t like the way that my circuits are firing, I just shut them off - sounds weird I know but, oddly, it works. Definitely don’t eat/drink all day, and try to create space for an activity that brings you joy every day.

Other comments:

I worked with an elderly retired postal worker 40 years ago who used to say to me, “Remember this: It’s not WHAT you have got that matters, it’s WHAT you do with it!” Words to live by.
